Today was day two of my Seattle adventure and day one of the Norwescon. This is only the second convention I have ever been to (I went to the first Walker Stalker Con back in 2015) and I have to say at first it was a little overwhelming. Thankfully, due to the laid back nature of those in attendance I was able to feel right at home with all the good nerdiness.
I started the day by getting my favorite book from the series A Song of Ice and Fire (A Storm of Swords) signed by none other than George R. R. Martin (a.k.a. the Stranger)! It was so amazing and I couldn’t believe that I actually got to be that close to the man. I spent the next few hours wandering around the convention, looking at different booths, conquering the Iron Throne, and listening to seminars on the difference between soldiers and warriors. Then came the banquet dinner! I was slightly bummed when I got randomly seated just two tables away from George R. R. Martin, but I got to meet some other amazing writers in attendance and had lively conversation that started with the principles of surviving a zombie apocalypse to real world issues such as utilizing technology (such as drones) to get food and aid to remote villages in Africa. Then it happened (after a lot of encouragement from my mom), I got to meet and chat with George R. R. Martin! I was completely awe struck but I tried to play it off as cool as possible. I told him that I loved the glorification of his bastard characters (speaking as a bastard myself) and when I told him that I identified with Jon Snow, he said “You know nothing Jon Snow”. I’m pretty sure I momentarily died; it was seriously a dream come true! He was such an amazing guy and I feel so blessed that I had the opportunity to meet and speak with him.
I didn’t get the opportunity to take a ton of photos today, but I should be able to take quite a few tomorrow. Tomorrow is the second day of Norwescon and it will be a day filled with all sorts of interesting panels and a Q&A session with George R. R. Martin. Tomorrow, I am also going on an underground tour and paranormal tour of Seattle, so I am hoping to get a few more amazing pictures!
